Why should the boys have all the fun? If you’re a girl with a love for wizards and witches then there are lots of Halloween costumes out there for you as well. Whether you’re in search of something modest or something more sexy or flashy to turn heads at your Halloween party, there is no shortage of options for you at online stores. Here’s a suggestion: how about making a DIY wizard costume from the comfort of your home?Check Price on Amazon
The first step to making a complete wizard costume is to craft the hat and beard. To make the hat, you need to find heavy construction paper. Then draw a 12-inch semi-circle on the paper using a compass (9 inches for kids). Cut out the semi-circle using scissors and join the ends of the cut-out to form a cone shape. To keep the cone shape, glue or staple the pointed ends where the points overlap together.
Next, cut 1 cm slits into the bottom of the cone, spread them out evenly about 3 cm apart then bend each slit outward so it spreads and points away from the cone. To make the bottom of the hat, measure the bottom of the cone then draw a straight line the same length on a construction paper.
Next, put a compass in the middle of the line and draw a circle around the line. Now, you should have a circle drawn out on the paper, the next step is putting your compass on the middle of the line again and drawing a larger circle, about 3-4 inches wider than the previous one, this circle will be the brim of the hat.Check Price on Amazon
Cut out both circles and discard the smaller one. Apply glue to the slits on the cone and push the large circle cut-out onto the cone before the glue dries. Press the cut-out against slits to ensure the cone sticks to the brim of the hat. Finally, decorate your hat with poster color, stickers, and glitter glue.
To make the beard, all you need is some yarn, scissors, and grosgrain ribbon. Take a piece of grosgrain ribbon long enough to tie around your head and tie head knots into it using the yarn. You could tie 40-50 pieces of yarn for an adult and 25-30 pieces for a kid. Take both ends of the ribbon and tie it at the back of your head making sure the yarn beard fits perfectly right under your nose.
Now you have a wizard hat and beard ready, next up is the robe. The wizard robe is a lot more complicated to make than it looks, so pay attention. Before you start sewing the robe, first you’ll need accurate measurements. Measure from your shoulder to your ankle to determine how long the robe will be and measure from wrist to wrist to know the length of the sleeves. Once you have your measurements, choose whatever color of fabric you would like the robe to be in. Choose a cotton fabric if you’re new to sewing outfits as they are easy to handle.Check Price on Amazon
Spread out a large fabric and fold it into two equal rectangles. Lie down on it with your shoulders at the top and spread your arms out wide with your legs about 2 feet apart making sure your entire body is within the fabric. Next, you’ll need a friend to trace the shape of your body on the fabric using a permanent marker. Trace about 12-15 inches away from the body if you want a billowing robe and about 5-7 inches away if you want a more fitted costume.
Once you’re done making the marks, get up and measure the tracing. Ensure the dimensions are in sync and if both sleeves are the same length. Once the measurements are confirmed and you are sure one sleeve won’t be longer than the other, cut both layers of the fabric along the markings to give you the front and back of the robe. Finally, neatly stitch the sides of both fabrics together leaving the bottom hem and space at the top where your head will go in.
Once this is complete, you should have a perfect wizard robe with a hat and a beard. You could find a drum stick or a medium-sized piece of wood as well as a large book to carry with you as wizards always have their magic wand and grimoire with them. Now go out and cast as many spells as you like!
