Choosing what costume your kid gets to wear on Halloween can be a difficult and often time-consuming process. The main thing to consider is what the kid wants or likes, especially if they’re old enough to communicate their preferences properly. With all the costume options these days, narrowing it down to just one is a daunting task, so while brainstorming costume ideas, it’s important to remember what your kid’s hobbies and interests are to give you a clue of what their dream costume might look like. Whether it’s superhero movies and cartoons, sports, dinosaurs, cars, etc. your kid’s interests are a natural starting point when picking their costume.

For kids and boys, in particular, you can hardly go wrong with a superhero costume. Superheroes can often play a big part in shaping a kid from a young age as they are shown in cartoons, movies, parties and lots of other places where kids spend a majority of their time. If you have an idea of what superhero your boy looks up to, then you can buy them a costume on an online store. Young ladies are often fans of strong female heroes too! Perhaps your girl is a huge fan of Wonder Woman or Captain Marvel, then its time to suit her up in her idol’s uniform.

Focusing on your kid’s interests when selecting their Halloween costumes makes the whole process ten times easier. Kids are incredibly curios and impressionable, meaning their range of hobbies and interests are broad. From superheroes to sports, favourite animals, movies, foods, books etc, your kid is likely to leave with a plethora of costume options that they will love. For some parents, having so many options and trying to narrow it down to one can prove daunting, however, you should remember you are selecting a costume for a kid, get them anything that’ll make them happy and increase their chances of getting extra candy from the neighbours.

While choosing your kid’s Halloween outfit, it’s important to remember kids need comfort. They will likely spend a large part of the time outdoors playing and trick or treating so remember to get them perfectly sized costume which they can easily take on and off in case they need to use the bathroom. You should also be mindful of their footwear, give them something comfortable and easy to move around in and for younger kids, make sure their costume doesn’t have any accessories which can be harmful to them or other kids.

Parents love to choose their kids Halloween costumes and some take it a step further by making every Halloween costume a DIY project. If you fall into the category of parents who would rather make your kid’s costume than spend cash every year, here’s how you can make a simple superhero costume for your kid from the comfort of your living room:

An iron man suit or Superman cape might be a little difficult to craft by yourself, so why don’t you help your kids feel super with a basic costume instead? We’re sure they won’t mind as long as they have a cool cape and mask. The first step is measuring your kid’s height from the back of their neck to just above their heel, as well as the width of their shoulders. This is the measurement for the cape, cut out the fabric into a rectangular shape using the measurement, preferably using liquid metal fabric or any other shiny and light material. Sew a basting stitch at the top of the cape and gather the fabric by gently pulling the thread on each side until the fabric gathers in the middle.

Next, find a bright coloured long or short-sleeved T-shirt that fits your kid perfectly. Cut out a large star sign from a fabric of a different colour and embellish the shirt by sewing it onto the chest of the shirt or use fabric glue. If the T-shirt is red, you could use a blue star sign and if it’s yellow, you could use a red star sign. Also, note that the colour of the large star sign on the chest will be the colour of the costume pants or skirt. Once your shirt is ready, its time to make the mask. Download a mask template or if you’re a bit of an artist, draw a mask shape into a piece of fabric matching the colour of the star sign on the shirt and cut it out. Add a strap to it by cutting two holes at either end and running ribbon through them.

Now, you have your mask, shirt and cape ready. You could sew the cape onto the neckline of the shirt to make it more comfortable for your kid or use a safety pin. Find shorts, pants or a skirt if it’s a girl, making sure they are of matching colours with the star sign on the shirt. Buy one at a thrift shop in the unlikely chance that your kid doesn’t have any. Finally, cut some fabric out of the leftover material you used for the cape and neatly tie it around your kid’s wrists to make a cuff. Now, your kid’s costume is complete, let them don their cape and go save the world!
