Alternatively, if you’re in a DIY mood or looking to save costs, you can make your very own pirate costume from the comfort of your home. Here are some steps you need to craft a prize-winning outfit for your Halloween party:
First, you might want to find a picture of a pirate. Your costume wouldn’t necessarily look like theirs, but it might be helpful in guiding you while making your costume and who knows, you might spot a thing or two you like and want to add to your own costume.
A key part of a pirate costume is their white top. Find a white shirt and cut holes into it in a random pattern around the sleeves and neckline to give you the rugged pirate look. Preferably find a man’s shirt as it will be bigger with flowing sleeves perfect for your private top. Since you’re a pirate and not a CEO, you might want to do away with the stiff collars by cutting them off roughly.Check Price on Amazon
So far you’ve done a lot of cutting and roughing, but now it’s time to apply some goodies to your costume! Pirates love some shine and glitter so you could add some shiny buttons and cuffs to your costume, a gold necklace or chain, and some ruffles around the collar and button line.
Now your pirate shirt is designed and ready to be used, it’s time to craft your pirate pants. If you don’t want to wear pants, long billowing skirts are also a favourite of female pirates and can be worn in place of trousers if you want something more comfortable and easier to move in.
For your pirate pants, you can choose plain black trousers and cut two or three holes into them, and rough up the hems a little bit. Pirates don’t wear perfectly ironed-out office trousers in case you’re wondering why you need to rough up your costume. You could paint horizontal stripes on the pants using fabric paint to give your costume some added pirate vibe. With your shirt and pants complete, you could throw on a vest, preferably a dark-coloured one and one that you can unbutton so your shirt can be seen underneath. Sew a couple of skull-shaped cloths onto your vest and
sleeves to complete your pirate dress-up.
The final part of making your costume is the extra accessories. First, a hat; pirates love hats. You could purchase a black hat online or make one yourself by cutting out two pirate hat shapes from a piece of paper, then glue them together only leaving the base of the hat where your head goes unglued. Leave it to dry then paint it black and paint a skull shape and crossbones into the front of the hat or you could print one off the net and glue it on if you aren’t an art guru.
To finish off your look, wear a red bandana around your neck and tie a couple of old or worn-out belts around your waist. Rock some old boots with a few holes in them and apply black makeup around your eyes. With this, your pirate dress-up is complete and you wouldn’t look out of place on the set of Pirates of the Caribbean. You could throw in a prop sword and an eye patch if you wish and that’s it, you look just like Queen Tueta of Illyria!
